Mexico City covered in heavy snowfall or volcanic ash this year
#9
These words really made me think of Mexico City, which is built on a dry lake bed. The following is from Wikipedia:

"Mexico City is estimated to have dropped 10 meters in the last century.[7] Furthermore, because soft lake sediments underlie most of Mexico City, the city has proven vulnerable to soil liquefaction during earthquakes, most notably in the 1985 earthquake when hundreds of buildings collapsed and thousands of lives were lost."

hole sink swarm means liquid.
Perhaps a volcanic blast with  lava preceded by a swarm of earthquakes.
