The great reckoning

I am visiting a town in Texas and it has a pretty stream running through it. I look east, up the stream and I see one-story, white stone buildings sitting sideways and in weird positions, and father out there is a skyline of taller buildings that are in ruin. I point and ask about them and someone says, "oh, they're left over from the "Great Reckoning". I am confused and wonder if they're referring to the Great Depression, but it wasn't that.
