I used to follow James McCanney's work (ex Cornell physicist), who insists that major catastrophes have happened in the ancient past from a near miss of large objects/asteroids. I believe he has said before that a near miss is even more catastrophic than an actual impact. But let's just go through a near miss and what it would.
Well, depending on how big it is and how close it gets, we're looking at a ROCK passing by Earth, which would make the Earth ROCK and BANK back and forth. We're looking at a possible disruption of the electromagnetic field, which could create an instantaneous pole shift.
And as IcanC already stated, forget about FOOD BANKS if this happens. All of us humans will be "EATING IT" (a metaphor for 'we're totally screwed')
