Red dirt field, skunk-tail mines?

Yes I'm wondering what did the "skunks" in the holes represent? It very well could've been alot of dead people or animals from radiation or other kind of poisoning. Somehow I think the black and white striping on each was important somehow, could be a reference to chemtrails maybe. Just that the white-black-white stripe pattern stood out against the desolate, yet almost fluorescent red earth.
