Pier and Porch.  They are similar things.  A pier is like a porch for the beach or a boat.  
Roof.  A roof is a cover, as is a porch and a pier. A pier covers the ocean.
van boat, might be a water taxi or ferry.
symbolism and symbol  are double words, so pay attention to symbols!
